I've looked at this fantasy through a pop cultural lens; that is I've used film, television, & literature's representations of the love story and female characters in general in an attempt to understand my own expectations of romantic love. Because of personal attachment to and experience with this fantasy or quest, which took a particularly strong hold of me when I discovered the intensely popular Twilight Saga, my thesis exhibition addressed romantic expectation primarily through the main love interest, Edward Cullen. The main performance (and centerpiece of the exhibition that followed) was a wedding ceremony in which I married the central love interest from the series, Edward Cullen, in the form of a cardboard cutout in a real Las Vegas chapel. The work is also an exploration of the dismissive, vitriolic, and at times violent attitude of the media and the public at large toward female fandom. Keywords: "obsessive," "feverish," "insane," "psychotic," etc. The press coverage I received following the release of a British tabloid article (Love It!, UK) and online communication in the form of tweets, Facebook comments, and comments on the respective articles' websites are included in this ongoing analysis. (See links below.) The ceremony took place at Viva Las Vegas Chapel in downtown Las Vegas on January 26, 2013. The ceremony was invite-only. The exhibition reception was open to the public. The ceremony was recorded and was originally intended to be streamed live on the internet. However, in lieu of the press coverage I received prior to the performance, I decided to cancel the live stream in order to retain control of the footage and preserve the integrity of the project. Documentation of the ceremony was shown as the centerpiece of the following exhibition, which doubled as our wedding reception, complete with receiving line, wedding cake (provided by Bouchon Las Vegas), flowers (provided by Flowers of the Field), and more. Reception elements were accompanied by photographs, video, audio, and collected objects presented in traditional gallery style.
